At the book launch last week I had the pleasure of meeting Raymond Abraham of Athens. He gave me a card with recollections and information about the asylum grounds as well as copies of a few pictures.
I have heard stories about people ice skating on the old ponds before they were destroyed in the re-routing of the river, and happily Ray gave me a copy of a photo of himself skating there in 1955. Judging by his form I believe Ray is an ice skater par excellence!
Katherine:
I tried a response and had a problem. Here goes again.
Richard, and perhaps his wife Mary Martha Fitz Harris and his daughter Mattie, get the Palm d’Or.
Care-giving does seem to flow through the genes. I am not sure of the sixth generation. Also, it’s not just the men that have to carry this; it’s the women too.
My husband does not know where “Kendrick” came from. I am researching it through his cousins. I know that it is on his mother’s side – Scotch-Irish who came over the Appalacians to Evansville, Indiana. Her name was Laura Kendrick Orr and she married Albert Trostel, Jr. Kendrick Orr Trostel’s brother, Robert Orr was governor in the 1987 era. Her other brother, Samuel, stayed with the Orr Iron Co. and a bank in Evansville.
Did you say that you would post some information on Richard Gundry and his time at Spring Grove on the web? If so, where do I find it?
I have a picture of Richard Gundry. He has a long, scraggly beard. My brother, Richard Keitley Gundry, M.D. has a five-generation picture of the Gundry doctors in the straight line, Richard Lewis Henry, Lewis Perkins, Richard K., John and Cooper Gundry. I intend to ask him to send me a copy. (He lives in Ramona, CA.) I am sending him your book. (I am also sending your book to my sister in Kutztown, PA and to the pediatrician cousin in Hagerstown, MD.)
I thoroughly enjoyed the Asylum on the Hill. Thank you for all the excellent work.
Hi, so very sorry for the trouble with the blog response. I will notify wordpress.
Wow the Palm d’Or, what an honor. I have not posted yet on Dr. Gundry but plan to. Although the only information I have is from the asylum annual report and a few things from the Spring Grove website. I may also have an obituary, not sure if I remember correctly. I wonder if I might quote some of what you have emailed me, in regard to the long and distinguished line of service in your family?
The Kendrick in my father’s family comes through South Carolina and then Alabama, it is Scots we think they dropped the Mac from MacKendrick. Best regards, Katherine
